I recently bought an old compaq presario 2700 that originally came with winxp home. i want to try out linux with it and add amikit to make it a fully functional computer again. It does have a dvd drive as well.

What version of linux and amikit should I be using to make this work? I have no knowledge of using anything but windows and the old amiga 500, so really no idea where to start here.

AmiPUP "IS" a Linux Distro. Just follow the instructions in that link.

Can you do this with a dvd instead of a USB drive? If not what size drive is required? These instructions are now very ckear for someone who has no clue about linux.

I think it can boot from DVD too, just try it.

AmiKit

Ok, I am finally getting back to trying this. I have burt two different Iso DVDs yet neither one will autoboot when I put it into the laptop without IOS. The drive spins up and I get a beep and that is it. Tested both disks in my running win 7 laptop and the dvd will not autoboot in ir either. I can access the files on the DVDs but nothing is volunteering to autoload the linux environment.

What am I doing wrong? No clue since this is my first time doing this without a windows factory recovery disc

Nevermind, I finally got it to load, but found out there is no hd on this machine to do anything with.

You don't need a hd/harddisk, just use AmiPup on a USB stick/pen/dongle

Download and install AmiPup to a 4GB or 8GB USB stick.
AmiPup itself takes some of the space on the USB, but the remaining free space on the USB can be used just like a hd/harddisk,
that you can install linux/amiga programs on, or create/save documents or files on.
So no need for a real harddisk in the laptop, just use the USB as a harddisk

When AmiPup boots it copies systemfiles from the USB to the RAM on the laptop, so something like 4GB RAM on the laptop itself is good.
This makes AmiPUP *REALLY* fast to use (the boot is a little slow because it copies files to the RAM) when finished booting.
All your linux programs will open in milliseconds, because everything runs from the RAM on the laptop and from the USB stick, not from a slow hd/harddisk in the laptop.

I used AmiPUP exactly that way (installed to a USB and copied to the RAM) for a loooong time and it was the fastest system I ever had, and I installed lots of linux programs on the free space on the USB

Life and sickness keep getting in the way of me finally getting this to working. I finally had some spare money to buy a larger USB stick. I had this working with the DVD ISO, but I could not figure out how to do anything with it. Do I need to download anything more then the ISO here? Do I need the WinUAE program installed to load the amikit? It seemed like I was only in Linux and nothing else.

So frustrating trying to understand how to install this when I have zero problems rebuilding system drives for my windows machines from a fresh drive. This should not be any harder, but I seem to not have 100% of the instructions no matter what file I look at.

Help....
